AI Is Reshaping Jobs — and Indians Are Looking Toward Entrepreneurship

As AI changes the nature of employment, rising interest in entrepreneurship and rapidly expanding e-commerce seller networks are opening new paths for Indians looking to build independent businesses.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the way businesses operate, and its impact is increasingly being felt in India's employment landscape. While AI is creating new roles and improving productivity in many sectors, it is also reducing the need for some routine and repetitive work. For a growing number of professionals, the changing job market is coinciding with a stronger interest in entrepreneurship and independent business.

A 2025 NITI Aayog roadmap on India's AI economy estimated that the country's technology sector could face the displacement of 1.5 million jobs by 2031, while also having the potential to create up to 4 million new opportunities if India successfully invests in AI skills, reskilling and new forms of employment. The report specifically highlights routine technology and customer-experience roles as areas that could face significant disruption. NITI Aayog

The impact is not necessarily limited to outright job losses. An IMF analysis of India's labour market estimates that around 26% of Indian workers are in occupations with some degree of AI exposure. It estimates that about 14% of workers are in occupations where AI is more likely to complement human work, while around 12% are in occupations with higher potential for displacement. IMF eLibrary

At the same time, interest in working independently appears to be growing.

According to LinkedIn's 2025 Work Change Small Business Report for India, 73% of Indian professionals surveyed said they wanted to work for themselves in the near future. LinkedIn also reported that the number of members in India adding "founder" to their profile increased by 104% year-over-year between July 2024 and July 2025. Conversations about entrepreneurship, startups and new business ventures in India also increased sharply, according to LinkedIn's data.

The Economic Survey 2025-26 reported that working owners accounted for around 60% of employed workers in the second quarter of FY2025-26, indicating the importance of self-employment and entrepreneurial activity. The Survey also highlighted 12.9 crore individuals involved in India's unincorporated non-farm sector.

More recent data from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation shows the scale of India's small-business economy. During April–June 2026, India had an estimated 8.67 crore unincorporated non-agricultural establishments employing 13.70 crore people. Working owners represented 62.38% of the workforce in this sector.

E-commerce is becoming one of the easiest entry points

The expansion of digital commerce is giving aspiring entrepreneurs another way to participate in the economy without relying entirely on traditional retail infrastructure.

Amazon India announced in September 2026 that its seller base had crossed 20 lakh sellers, with more than 3 lakh sellers joining the platform. Amazon also reported that adoption of its AI-powered advertising tools had increased 77% year-over-year, while more than 2 lakh sellers were using its AI-powered listing tools.

Meesho is seeing similar growth. According to its investor information, the platform had more than 1.04 million annual transacting sellers for the 12 months ending June 30, 2026. Meesho says many of these sellers are first-time participants in e-commerce.

The increasing use of AI within e-commerce is also notable. A 2026 Snapdeal Bharat Seller Report, reported by Fortune India, found that 56% of surveyed online sellers were already using AI-powered tools for their businesses.
