Amazon India has crossed an important milestone, with its seller base reaching more than 20 lakh sellers, according to the company's September 2026 announcement. More than 3 lakh sellers joined Amazon.in over the past year, making the expansion one of the company's strongest seller-growth periods in three years. US Press Center
The milestone highlights a broader change taking place in India's e-commerce market: selling online is increasingly becoming part of how businesses of different sizes reach customers.
Amazon said the growth includes businesses ranging from first-generation entrepreneurs in Tier 3 towns to established brands managing thousands of products. The company also pointed to lower selling fees, fulfilment infrastructure and technology as factors supporting seller participation.

One of the most significant developments is the increasing use of artificial intelligence by online sellers.
Amazon's Seller Assistant, an AI-powered tool available around the clock, can help sellers with activities such as listing creation, inventory planning, fee estimates and business insights. Amazon said interactions with Seller Assistant have grown 7.5 times year-on-year.
The company also reported that more than 2 lakh sellers are using its AI-powered listing tools to simplify catalogue creation. More than 28,000 sellers are using its Product Opportunity Explorer to identify potential product opportunities using customer-demand data.

The development comes as India's overall online retail market continues to expand. Research from Redseer estimates that India's online retail market grew approximately 25% year-on-year in the first half of 2026, with the full-year market projected to cross $90 billion.

For entrepreneurs, the significance of this shift goes beyond one marketplace.
The growth of online sellers suggests that digital commerce is becoming a more established route to market for businesses across India's cities and towns. Technology is also moving beyond simply putting products online. AI tools are increasingly being used to help sellers create listings, understand demand, plan inventory and develop advertising content.
This is also where the broader e-commerce ecosystem is evolving. Platforms such as factori.com are built around simplifying the process of launching an online store and giving entrepreneurs access to products and digital infrastructure without requiring them to build every part of the system themselves.
The growth of India's online seller community raises an important question for aspiring entrepreneurs: is the next step in starting a business no longer about finding a physical location, but finding the right digital route to customers?
With millions of sellers already participating in online commerce and technology continuing to simplify several parts of the selling process, India's e-commerce landscape is increasingly becoming accessible to businesses beyond the country's largest brands.
The challenge, however, remains the same: getting customers, understanding demand and building a business that can retain them.
