Flipkart an online shopping platform, which just purchased a 100% share in Cleartrip, one of India’s oldest travel booking portals, has selected a new CEO for the company. According to individuals familiar with the situation, Ayyappan R, the chief business officer of Flipkart-owned fashion e-commerce portal Myntra, has been promoted to the job of CEO of Cleartrip.
Stuart Crighton, who cofounded the travel company with Hrush Bhatt and Matthew Spacie in 2006, will take on a new job as CEO of Cleartrip International, according to sources. Sharon Pais will take over Ayyappan R’s role in Myntra.
This is Flipkart’s first substantial restructure at Cleartrip since acquiring the travel platform in April of this year with the goal of diversifying and strengthening its overall offerings.
Cleartrip will continue to exist as a separate brand while closely working with Flipkart to further develop technology solutions, according to the Walmart-owned e-commerce giant at the time of the acquisition.
The change in Cleartrip’s leadership comes as the travel industry recovers from the second wave of the Covid-19 outbreak and is projected to see a major rebound in business during the current holiday season.
For the past decade, Cleartrip has competed with larger rivals such as MakeMyTrip and GoIbibo. Booking.com, EaseMyTrip, Yatra, and Ixigo are some of the other companies in the area.
Amazon, Flipkart’s main competitor, has also taken moves to extend into the online travel and hotel reservation industry. Until Flipkart obtained Cleartrip, these e-commerce startups had mostly formed alliances with incumbent competitors in their respective industries. Flipkart previously collaborated with MakeMyTrip and announced a similar collaboration with Ixigo 2 years ago. Amazon announced a partnership with Cleartrip in 2019.
