How to Price Your Products Online When Competing With Marketplaces

Small businesses can compete with marketplaces by managing costs, protecting profit margins and highlighting their unique value instead of relying on constant discounts.

Competing with large online marketplaces on price can feel like an uphill battle for small businesses. Customers can compare products from multiple sellers within seconds, making it tempting for independent retailers to lower prices just to win a sale. But constantly offering discounts can reduce profits and make sustainable growth difficult.

The smarter approach is to understand the actual cost of selling a product online and build a pricing strategy around both profitability and customer value.

1. Calculate the full cost of every product

The purchase price is only one part of the total cost. Sellers should account for packaging, shipping, payment processing, marketplace commissions, advertising, returns and other applicable expenses. Amazon India, for example, lists seller fees that can include referral fees, closing fees, shipping-related charges and optional services. These vary by category and fulfilment method.

2. Know your break-even price

Before setting a selling price, calculate the minimum amount needed to cover the costs associated with each order. Then add a realistic profit margin. This helps sellers avoid the common mistake of increasing sales while earning very little—or losing money—on each transaction.

3. Don't compete on price alone

Marketplaces often offer customers a wide selection and convenient comparison tools. Independent stores can differentiate themselves through specialised products, personal service, carefully selected collections, local expertise and a more direct relationship with customers. Clear product descriptions, quality photographs and genuine customer reviews can also strengthen buyer confidence.

4. Use discounts strategically

Discounts can attract first-time buyers, encourage repeat purchases or help clear seasonal inventory. However, every offer should have a defined purpose and a price floor. Instead of reducing the price of every product, sellers can experiment with bundles, minimum-order benefits or limited promotions while monitoring their margins.

5. Compare the complete customer offer

Customers don't always choose the lowest listed price. Delivery charges, estimated arrival dates, product quality, return policies and trust can influence their decisions. Small businesses should review competitor prices regularly, but compare similar products and equivalent service levels rather than copying a competitor blindly.

6. Build a pricing strategy you can sustain

An independent online store gives a retailer another channel to present their brand, test offers and understand customer preferences. Sellers should track revenue, product-level margins, conversion rates and repeat purchases to see which pricing decisions work.

Ultimately, successful online pricing is not about being the cheapest seller in the market. It is about offering a compelling product at a price customers are willing to pay—while leaving enough margin for the business to grow.
